Happy poly moment:
suburbanamnesia: My boyfriend and his partner are playing Diablo II together on their separate laptops sitting on opposite sides of the room, and it’s pretty adorable, ngl Hee! We are adorable while killing monsters. My character summons puppies and turns into a bear!

New Silly Song - Tom Lenk Tweeted Me
So Tom Lenk played Andrew Wells on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and he was my faaavorite character and that was my faaavorite show. This morning I asked him a question on Twitter, and he wrote back! True story! I was in a VERY silly mood and wrote this song about the conversation. LOL. Ok, it’s sort of about the conversation, and sort of about how excited people tend to get when some TV or...

New song - My Favorite Bribe
Since I last posted, I turned both those song samples into complete songs! My Favorite Bribe and Dark is the Night. I also wrote a song commission, applied for an AFA recording grant, and applied for a spot in Heart of the City Festival again this year. Wish me luck! Here is a recording of My Favorite Bribe. Let me know what you think! My Favorite Bribe - MP3 This song is a true story. I...

Two Song Samples, and MBT Makes You a Valentine's...
Ok, I haven’t posted in a while. A long time, actually. 2010 was kind of a jerk, and kept me very busy. My goal for the year was to write 12 songs, and I ended up writing seven: Before You Go, Whatever the Weather, More, Just Like Spock, The Thank You Song, Can I Play Magic?, and The Programmer Song. I realize you haven’t heard all of these, and I really do hope to rectify that. A few...

Upcoming concert, Sunworks, Red Deer
Just a quick update to let you know I have a concert coming up this Friday! It’s at Sunworks in Red Deer. It’s completely unplugged, just me and a guitar, and I’m the only performer. I’ll be playing for about 45-60 minutes. It’ll be a pretty intimate atmosphere, with a question and answer period afterward, and there’ll be wine and cheese. There’s no cover,...

Beyond the rim of the star light...
Yesterday I listened to the Star Trek TOS theme song to figure out how to play it on the piano (just the melody part) and at first it seemed pretty tricky. It seemed to be in the key on B, which has five sharps. So on the piano, that’s more black notes than white. Yikes! When I had all the notes, I wanted it to be in C so I just transcribed it up one semi-tone, and suddenly it was really...

Reassurance
Just Like Spock was very well received at the Songwriters’ Circle on Monday! I had not been feeling confident about it at all, previous to that, but now I’ve seen how enjoyable it is (which is, of course, the whole point) and I no longer have that feeling of “I need to rewrite it all from scratch!” Hooray! I also found out that I’m definitely accepted into the Heart...

Progress
I’m looking forward to bringing the new song, Just Like Spock, to the songwriters’ circle tomorrow, because it started out a silly joke, and ended up gaining some serious bits, and I’m not quite sure what to do about that. But I know as soon as I play it to other songwriters, they’ll have lots of great ideas for how to make it flow. You might have noticed I didn’t...

Website redesign
I’ve been having lots of fun redesigning the whole site from scratch. I’ve got a lot more to do, but here’s a picture of where I’m at so far: I think it looks a lot better and the navigation makes more sense. I’m actually really excited about it. :) The new song, More, is not very far from being completed. It’s got industrial sounding instrumentation,...

New song! Whatever the Weather
I’m finally finished recording! Please take a listen and let me know what you think: http://bit.ly/whatevertheweather [MP3, 2.7MB, 2:58] I’m so excited to finally share it. I tried to make it a little bit childish, a little bit Edmonton-centric, and a lot true. Here are the main things to remember: You don’t need money to have fun; whatever the weather is doing, you can always...

Recording in the Powder Room
I spent all day working on recording Whatever the Weather. Guitar, vocals, and bass are all done. Not sure what else it needs, but it needs something. I’m going to take at least a day or two off from it. Eliminating background noise sure can be frustrating. :P I thought you might like to see my vocal recording setup, because it’s kind of ridiculous. The quietest place in my...

Song Previews
I had originally wanted to finish recording Whatever the Weather by the end of today, but that’s not going to happen now, for a bunch of reasons. I’m not going to beat myself up about it. I’m also not going to let it delay my next song, which I’ll start writing this week, as planned. Songs can overlap. It’s all good. Instead, here are little preview samples of the...

Practice Makes Perfect
Yesterday I was randomly asked to perform on stage while I was hanging out with a friend at a cafe. The pianist who was playing overheard our conversation and figured out that I’m a musician. So I played Before You Go (and totally forgot the second verse) and Whatever the Weather (and made TONS of mistakes). It was pretty fun and unexpected, and reminded me that I am REALLY out of practice...

The Editing Process
Well, I have pretty much achieved my goal of learning finger picking. (Although I definitely have a long way to go, I’m at the point where I can get through a whole song without sounding dumb.) And I finished writing Whatever the Weather before the end of February. Yay! Tomorrow is the Songwriters’ Circle, and after I use the suggestions I get there to finalize the arrangement and...

Whatever the Weather writing is almost complete
I’ve decided the new song is called Whatever the Weather. It’s coming along nicely: all the lyrics are done, and all of the melody, along with the chords for the chorus. It’s a lot of fun! It’s about how there’s always something fun to do no matter what the weather is like. I’ve been practicing finger picking on the guitar this week. I’m finding it a...

A look back at the Before You Go recording process
Before You Go was basically done last week, but I didn’t send it to Joss’d yet (that’s who requested it in the first place) because I could hear these tiny little glitchy noises every time I played it back, like brief little moments of static. It was driving me CRAZY! So yesterday I opened it up and zoomed right in on the waveform, and played it back much slower than real time,...

Goals for the year - A song a month
I have all kinds of musical goals for this year, and I’m going to use this blog to update you on them, so you can keep tabs on me and keep me motivated. :) My main and most important goal is to write a song a month. The one I wrote in January is called Before You Go, but I can’t share it yet because I wrote it for a Podcast called Joss’d, and I want to release the song at the...
